Eventful sports weekend. Safin won the Australian Open mens final to continue to Russian trend in the Grand Slams. Poor Aussie Leyton Hewitt could not bring home the trophy for the home crowd.
Sammy Sosa will not play in Wrigled Field anymore. He is moving to Baltimore to play for the Orioles....I hope Slammin Sammy does well this year.

Safin ends Federer's winning streak in semifinals
Finally, Federer has been put to rest. Marat Safin beats him in the Australian Open. 9-7 final set. Amazing match. Marat safin won the U.S. Open in 2000 and I thought he would set the world on fire. But he never took off. He has the power game but is a tad old at 25. I am rooting for Marat or Hewitt. I don't like Andy Roddick especially after an all-American final in which Serena plays Lindsay Davenport.
I hope Federer comes back strong for Roland Garros.

Sania Mirza gets a A- from Sports Illustrated...

St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Carolina have all clipped the wings of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game...
Michael Vick and Atlanta Falcones wanted to do the same in this bird fight bewteen the falcons and eagles.... But the Eagles are prevailing now....
They will be going to Jacksonville after leading 27-10 with 3.21 to go in the 4th quarter.... Super Bowl is awaiting them... Donovan Mcnabb is leading them to this year's bowl game..
Withot even waiting to see who is going to come from the other half of the draw, I am going with Eagles because of Donovan McNabb.. He is an African American Quarterback and will be the second one in the history of the NFL to win the Super Bowl, if he wins it
I have a dream and I hope Donovan lives it...

Serena Vs. Sania continued...
Sania comes back from 40-15 to make it deuce... she is taking it to Serena....Mary Joe Fernandez feels that Sania is the hardest hitting opponent that Serena has played in the tournament... the problem is Serena is serving wickedly.... nearly 65-70% first serves have gone in....
0-30 on Sania's serve, 3-3 second set....15-30...15-40..second serve... bitch... net cord... Serena breaks Sania.. 4-3 Serena
What a return of serve from Sania... 0-15...15-15.... good high backhand volley from Serena...15-30... forehand into the net has serena talking to herself....Serena holds...
30-40 on Sania's serve... Deuce... saved two match points....advantage sania.... boy she has a good forehand....Sania holds..... Serena will now serve for the match..
Serena to serve for the match....Serena is too damn powerful on her serve...Two service winners... 30-0 ... One more service winner... 40-0... second serve ace....
Serena wins... 12 aces from Serena
I am not a person who supports mediocrity even when it comes from an Indian. My friends will tell you how critical I am of the Indian cricket team and their lack of killer instinct... I have a hunch that Sania will go quite a distance she stays unspoilt by all the adulation that she is going to get...
I am watching Sania play Serena at Melbourne. The commentators somehow have the problem digesting the fact that someone from India is in the third round...This
stupid commentator Tim Ryan says she was born in Mumbai, formerly Madras.... cannot believe that these fellows cannot do their homework right before going on air....
She blasts a backhand return winner... I think this girl has the potential if she is hungry for more... Serena is little too powerful for her..
Sania's favorite tennis player- Steffi Graf but the commentators tells us that Sania has been shy to go and introduce herself to Steffi even though she has seen Steffi around....Serena is just bullying her but Sania has some deep groundstrokes...
Sania looks equally good from both sides...Serena just keeps bullying her with her first serves but Sania hs quite some zing on her forehand...
Nirmal Sekhar is on TV... He is one of my favorite writers on Sportstar... I would give him a great deal of credit for some of my vocabulary....
Sania has 3 breakpoints....Serena creeps to "DEUCE"... Sania makes Serena see red... Advantage Sania....Serena serves an ace....Serena holds...
Boy, Sania can hit the ball...She has a pretty neat serve.. She is doing it without much grunting ... Serena does all the grunting...Sania holds serve at "love"....

Sania and Maria
An Indian tennis player in a Grand slam third round... Everyone is excused if they think they are day dreaming but it has finally happend. Sania Mirza has made it. I think this has to be the best showing by an Indian in a Grand Slam tournament since Vijay Amritraj reached the last eight of Wimbledon some twenty five years back.
Sania will be facing Serena Williams and I don't give her much of a shot to get into the round of 16 but it is nevertheless a great start to her career. I hope she climbs the ladders and makes India proud....
I watched Maria Sharapova last night. She lost the first set but came back strongly against the "never say die" Lindsey Lee Waters. Maria and Lindsay really otudid each other, not only with their groundstrokes but also some loud grunting. Hasn't women's tennis chnaged over the last 10 years? In those days, a frenchwoman named Nathalie Tauziat complained against Monica Seles's grunting but today grunting in womens tennis is as common as short clothes.

Boy, I was wrong... I thought Manning would be able to work his magic and finally break the jinx in New England. But the Bellchick coacked football team won again. Now that Manning has lost, I am rooting for Michael Vick and Ben Roethlisberger. C'mon guys!!! Beat up competition.....
A Small step for Indian Hockey
Hockey in India has always live in past glory. It is India's national game but cricket has pushed hockey into the oblivion over the last two decaes. But hereis a chance for revival and maybe even better cricket in terms of popularity. Hockey has been repackaged for good and finally we have a Professional Hockey League. Iit is humble beginning with just ten teams but it will surely hit the right chord in the future. With sponsorship from Adidas and patronage from ESPN-Stata sports, PHL might one day become a force to reckon just like MLB, NBA, NFL. So folks in India, switch on your TV sets and watch some hockey......

NFL playoffs are here. It is the best time for beer, bowls and boos. I am favoring the Indianapolis Colts to win it all. Peyton Manning , the Colts Quarterback, is a personal favorite after Brett Favre of Green Bay Pakcers. So tommorow is the week leading upto the AFC and NFC Champiosnhip games... Here are my 4 predictions.
AFC
1. Indianapolis Colts Vs. New England Patriots - Colts . I think Peyton manning has an answer to the Pats defense this time.
2. New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Pirates - Pittsburgh Pirates. Rookie Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will kick some ass along with his two running backs.
NFC
1. Philadelphia Eagles Vs. Minnesota Vikings - Minnesota Vikings. Duante Culpepper to Randy Moss - TD TD TD ... You will hear it more often than this weekend.. Maybe you will see more mooning from Randy Moss.
2. Atlanta Falcons Vs. St.Louis Rams - Atlanta Falcons.. What can I say about Michael Vick? I have one word for him.... MAGICIAN
I would love to see a Peyton manning against Michael Vick type Super Bowl. It will be an ideal content between two of the most talented quarterbacks in the game today.

Cricket tries to go American
Folks in America cannot believe that a game can be played for one whole day and the spectators still watch it. In today's fast forward eorld, almost everything is evolving. Why not the Gentleman's game? Australia A faces Pakistan in the first Twenty 20 international game on Thursday. I have heard about the concept, but I was not entirely sure about the rules. So I googled on them and found this. The format is extrmely popular in England where they have not accepted anything other than traditional cricket. The games last for about 21/2 hour very much similar to MLB, NBA or NFL games. I am looking forward to this new change in the game....

The Big Unit in the Big Apple
I am a big fan of Randy Johnson. I just love his countenance on the mound. Those fast balls and sliders just fuel my obessession for him. Randy was the lone jewel in D'backs crown for the last 6 years. Many would say Curt Schilling was better but Randy was head and shoulders above him in terms of clutch performance and commanding stuff.
Now, Randy has decided to change bases from the snake pit to the house that Ruth Built. Randy in pinstripes. Randy is a Yankee just like numerous other greats of baseball from Ruth to Jeter. I hate the Yankees but I will surely cheer for them now once every five days when the Big Unit Randy Johnson takes the mound but it better not being against the Red Sox.
Anyways, here is my bold prediction, 2005 AL Cy Young Winner: Randy Johnson....
